SEAS Monmouth Overview

Our mission: to promote and encourage small craft activity as recreation and sport by providing low cost learn-to-sail programs and to encourage relationships among all persons interested in sailing craft and water safety. All persons regardless of race, creed, sex or national origin shall be eligible for membership.

The chapter holds monthly meetings at Charlie Brown's restaurant in Tinton Falls.  Click here for a list of past and future speakers

The Monmouth chapter of SEAS runs a full range of sailing courses from basic through advanced, including cruising.  Our basic sailing course is for people interested in learning how to sail. These courses consist of four evening classroom sessions plus two full days on the water in the chapter's own boats. The basic sailing fleet consists of multiple Lasers, a 14' Javelin, and a 17' O'Day - a mix of boats that allows students to learn to sail both sloop-rigged (2 sails) and single sail boats in the safety of the Shrewsbury River.

In addition, we have "buddy sails" on Thursday evenings on the Javelin and O'Day 17 to give members the chance to practice their skills with more experienced club members available for help and advice.  Throughout the season we also have full-day Saturday sailing sessions using the Lasers, Javelin, and O'Day 17 open to all club members.

For more advanced sailing and boat handling, the chapter owns keelboats which are used for teaching, day-sailing and planned excursions on the Sandy Hook and Raritan Bays.  Additional details on these  boats may be found on the Keelboat page.

We also offer a course designed to prepare sailers for cruising, covering all aspects of preparing for and undertaking a cruise on a large cruiser (38-40 ft) for a weekend or longer.  The course culminates with a 3-day Columbus Day weekend cruise on the Chesapeake Bay.  Numerous cruises throughout the year allow students to continue to enhance their skills and experience.

Look at our summer sailing schedule to see what's happening on the water, and how to get involved.

All the SEAS chapters arrange bareboat charter cruises at numerous premier sailing locations both within the U.S. and abroad.  Both weekend and weeklong cruises are organized.  Recent destinations have included the Chesapeake Bay, New England (Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Block Island), various islands in the Bahamas and the Caribbean, Tahiti, Turkey, and Spain.  In addition, we've cruised in the Florida Keys and the British Virgin Islands. The chapter has qualified skippers, and there also is a program to train and qualify members as first mates and skippers.
